The Firm is committed to giving back to the community at large and for this, our team dedicatedly provides pro bono services in addition to regular legal services.

Our team of experts is committed to various kinds of pro bono litigation ranging from the representation and defence of underprivileged individuals to litigation in furtherance of certain social, legal and environmental causes.

We are happy to be part of important social causes and take pride in representing such matters. Over time we have contributed to some landmark cases which we have dealt with as part of our pro bono litigation, in turn adding to our considerable litigation practice.

Key highlights

The Firm represents a reformist faction of the Dawoodi Bora community, in a Constitutional challenge to the regressive and cruel practice of ex-communication and social boycott, ordered against any member of the community that displeases the Dai, considered to be the spiritual leader of the community. The matter is presently pending adjudication before a Five Judge Bench of the Supreme Court.

The Firm represents Mrs. Dilshad Tavawalla and Ms. Shaheeda Kirtane, interveners in a Constitutional challenge to the cruel and dangerous practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), practised in the Dawoodi Bora community. The matter has been tagged along with the Sabrimala case, presently pending before a Nine Judge Bench of the Supreme Court on questions involving the interpretation of Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution.

The Firm represents MIT graduate and environmental activist Ms. Almitra Patel, in her application before the National Green Tribunal, seeking the stoppage of open dumping of urban waste in the country, and its replacement with eco-friendly processing and disposal of municipal solid waste.

The Firm represents a group of young petitioners from the LGBTQIA+ community, in the matter of Udit Sood v. Union of India, in a challenge to the interpretation of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, seeking an interpretation that allows for marriage equality to all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation.

The Firm represents the Deaf and Hard–of–Hearing Community in public interest litigation filed in the Supreme Court seeking the enforcement of their fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution and directions for the enforcement of and/or formulation of specific rules and regulations under the aegis of the Rights of Person with Disabilities Act, 2016 to make it mandatory for movie theatres and television channels (in particular for news telecasts and other telecasts of national importance) to provide open caption/subtitles in such telecasts.
The Firm has been advising and representing noted animal rights activist, Gauri Maulekhi, in an ongoing Public Interest Litigation before the Supreme Court seeking to address the urgent requirement of having fully operational State Animal Welfare Boards across every State and Union Territory to manage and deal with issues pertaining to animal welfare as envisaged under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
